In previous years, offshoring seemed like the right move. However, with the current trajectory in manufacturing, companies are now considering reshoring.

The challenge is that there are hundreds of U.S.-based steel wire suppliers, and all of them will say, “We are the best.” That’s why it’s crucial that you do your research to determine which supplier would be the best partner for your company.

Offshore suppliers may offer some value-added services, but they often provide standard catalog products because coordinating custom work is more complex. Look for domestic suppliers that provide in-house quality control, logistics, and processing capabilities, so you’re always getting steel wire the way you need it, when you need it, and without having to subcontract operations and increase risks.
It’s difficult to get the support you need from an offshore partner simply due to time and distance, which means problems, like inventory shortages or quality issues, can’t be resolved as quickly as they need to be.
The right domestic supplier can recommend the optimal wire specifications for certain applications, including grade, tensile strength, and diameter, offer professional advice to maximize efficiency and minimize waste, and even provide on-site assistance, including troubleshooting and diagnosing problems and training operators on best practices.
When you’re vetting steel wire suppliers, be sure to ask them if they offer setup and production support, and in what specific ways.
Late delivery is a common issue with offshore partners, and larger minimum order quantities are required to justify container shipments, so manufacturers must commit to forecasts far in advance.

Be sure to ask potential partners for specifics on how they support inventory tracking, request references, and assess how they respond to these initial inquiries.
Quality should always be a top concern when buying steel wire products. With offshore suppliers, quality issues are more difficult to resolve because shipping times are already slow, and sometimes communicating them is a challenge in itself due to language barriers.
That said, quality isn’t guaranteed when working with a domestic supplier. For example, potential suppliers may “guarantee” tensile strength and hardness, but that’s enough—they have to prove it.
During the supplier vetting process, look for laboratory capabilities for hardness and tensile testing. They should also maintain a Quality Management System that complies with ISO 9001:2015 regulations, which ensures consistency and traceability. Always check the scope of activities covered by the certification!
Most raw steel producers are in India and China, so sourcing raw materials overseas seems more efficient, but overseas mills keep stock in the United States, too, so it’s not necessarily cheaper to work with an offshore supplier.
When you vet potential steel wire suppliers, ask about their sourcing practices. They should have preferred suppliers for the materials you plan to purchase, and, as part of their QMS, methods to ensure dependable supply and quality. If they’re not eager to discuss this, it’s time to look elsewhere.
